NPSH CALCULATION INSTRUCTION

The NPSH calculator at left side was developed by OilGas engineers. It is a useful tool in pump design and troubleshooting. With the NPSH data, you can evaluate the pump performance and the risk of pump cavitation.

To calculate pump’s NPSH, simply input the fluid data and the piping system information in the calculator form at left. The calculation results will be shown in the form result section immediately. For your convenience in calculation, the input fields are marked with white background. The fields with gray background are results fields. The key calculation results are highlighted in blue color.

Correct input have to be provided in order to get a correct pump sizing results. An example pumping system sketch is attached below to help you understand the input data and calculation results.

HOW TO OBTAIN REQUIRED INPUT DATA

FLUID PROPERTIES

Fluid specific gravity and vapor pressure can be found in various chemical engineer hand books. You can also get them by clicking below buttons.

ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE

At sea level is 14.7psia. Atmospheric pressure decreases about 0.00053psi with each ft of altitude increase.

PIPING LOSSES

Piping Losses can be calculated with the Pipe Pressure Drop Calculator by clicking the button below.

PUMP SELECTION & TROUBLESHOOTING

To ensure a pump working properly:

  1. The pump’s NPSH requirement have to be less than the NPSH available calculated from the Pump Sizing Calculator.
  2. At the same time pump’s available TDH (total dynamic head) has to be higher than the TDH calculated from the Pump Sizing Calculator.
  3. In addition installed pump motor’s horsepower much be higher than the brake power calculated from the Pump Sizing Calculator.
